Today in Immigration News ...

... Latina Lista sums up the predicted positive economic benefits of immigration reform gleaned from a call today sponsored by the Immigration Policy Institute.
President Obama appears to be ready to walk back the protectionist Teamsters-driven provision he signed into law eliminating the pilot program to permit Mexican truckers access to U.S. roads after Mexico utilized provisions of NAFTA to penalize key U.S. industries in retaliation. I haven't been following this story as closely as I should, but I'm keeping an eye on it now.
And Guillermo Arriaga writes about how, perversely, closing the border keeps many undocumented migrants from leaving the U.S.
I know this because I know dozens of immigrants: Most of them want to return to Mexico. Their purpose in crossing the border is to find a job and the means to live with more dignity than their country can offer.
They do want to come back. They don't want to spend entire nights chewing over their jealousy, imagining their women in the arms of others.
They don't want their children's lives to go on without them. They don't want to be separated from their lands or their homes.
They want to work, to make an honest living. And then to return. It's that simple: to return.
Looking to history, or even just to contemporary Europe, this dynamic appears again and again. But U.S. politicians don't seem to get it.
