Offenders: The 'Illegal Alien' Halloween Costume
Published October 16, 2009 @ 03:34PM PT

This 'illegal alien' Halloween costume, complete with a fake green card is available at several online stores, including Buy.com, Amazon, Target, and Walgreens.
The overwhelming message sent through this particular costume is that 'illegal aliens' are subhuman, which legitimizes their detention in orange jumpsuits. Gitmo anyone?
There's also 'illegal alien' masks, as well as an 'over-sexed' costume for women complete with a sombrero hat to remind us that those 'illegals' are from Mexico.
Considering many of the companies selling these costumes, especially Target and Walgreens, employ undocumented immigrants, has anyone seen this 'escaped convict' in their customer service departments?
Sorry, we usually look more like this, and love our corporate Gap, Navy, American Eagle, Banana Republic, smokin' wheels and bling-bling. Maybe there is some money to be made on suing for misrepresentation. We have much better fashion sense. Try again.
10/19/09 Update: Target, Walgreens, Amazon and Toys R Us have apologized, pulling the costume off shelves.

I just ordered a Casino lady costume from buy.com and I usually order 2 costumes a year from them and that has made me so upset I am going to give them a call and explain to them that the costume is offensive. This is horrible!! I will have to make a round of phone calls. Targets corporate needs one too and Walgreens. I shop at all 3 of those stores and I think this entire costume is disgusting.

I just wrote a long message to buycostumes.com explaining to them how much little children will be heartbroken if they see this. I will call them up on Monday to follow up. It looks like Target is already taken care off. Hopefully they will pull it.

How dumb can it get? By coincidence I was up at a candidates night in N.Jersey the other day. Not for the 3 big honchos of course, but for the little squirts running and messing up the ballot for Chris Daggett. There's another one coming up in 2 weeks and I thought of suggesting at this last debate, since it was hardly covered, we might come in costumes at the next?
I have to promote myself, here's a link. I'm going ape s*** over on facebook by the way.

Hey Gary, Funny...Yo La Tengo! There is really inspiring words on the Diana post. Go read some of the stuff over there. Liquiod is a trolling again. lol...Nothing new. I like her words about living life in fear is not living your life. I am going to have to keep those words with me everyday. Also she wrote about living your dream even though you haven't completed a degree. Those words are wonderful for lots of people out there. They are wonderful words of wisdom. What a great girl! She is an inspiration to many others.

I went over and "greeted" Liquids. Every one is very busy, I understand all that, but I have a question for you Mary. Did you use my link, or did you just see the words "yo la tengo?"

Hi Gary, I used your link to see the band jam and I saw that they use those words. I like metal. I have a few guitars myself. A fender strat and a Gibson les paul studio. "Getting dusty and packed away" I should start playing them again but I haven't any spare time. That was an interesting band you linked to and a breath of fresh air to take my mind off the ugly Halloween costume.

Mary promise me you'll take out the guitars and start playing again. Make the time, if you're spending to much time trying to change the world- it won't work. Look at me! I'm on the god damned ballot for Governor saying unthinkable things (amnesty) and nobody knows I exist...... never mind anyone trying to refute me.
And it seems ana lisa is being more then adequately replaced by a a couple of new people. They're giving "Reigns" fits!
You went to my site and didn't take the time to smell the flowers. This was up yesterday. Take up the guitar again.

Gary, Its funny that you mention that because on the way to Newark airport my niece and I were talking about styles of music and I heard a song written about Immigration and detentions and it was a nice song but it was soft, religious and folk. It was played as a church.
My niece is studying the keyboards and I had an old song playing from a stones album "Between the buttons" and I was saying now this could be the right melody for an Immigration song. It had a grass blues sound with that circus style of music.
Have you ever heard of the band "world inferno"? They have a circus/ska/punk way about them. Really amazing band. Anyway, I thought something like that with a touch of ranchero music in it with the grunge of course...could make a nice political statement.
Anyway, it takes time, talent, creativity and it the right connections. Not an easy trip but if I was to take the guitars out I would just do it for fun.
I use to try to write my own songs and I did play in a band a while ago in Latin clubs. My band members didn't speak all that much English except for the band leader who played the Saxophone. He was awesome!!! He could improvise anything on the spot. As far as being an organized person; he couldn't find his way out of a paper-bag but as a musician he was the best...and they say one of the top saxophone players from Costa Rica. He was a professor in the university and that is how he came here on a special visa.
I use to love it when he played Frank Sinatras song "New York, New York". It was really funny because he had this asian look to him but sang it like Sinatra. What a scene! Those were some great times. Everynight after a performance he use to cry "literally cry" at the bar in tears about the fact that he wanted to continue to study in the university and not play clubs. I didn't really understand his whinning back then because I liked the club performances. I liked standing up in front of an audience.
He also said I had a special talent of creativity. He said I could make up melodys as we went along and claimed that wasn't easy. He was very talented when it came to reading and playing the music written. He said if only he could get me to study and become more regimented I could utilize my talent but I have studyed before and it takes a month to accomplish one piece of music and play it with perfection and it is also best to learn that in your youth.

(was played as a church) Gary, I meant to say played in a church. lol
Anyway, am really a stinky guitarist. I know how to play power chords and a little riff and Jorge (The Sax Player) use to put the amp low for me so that if I made "many errors" the rest of the band would drown me out.
I would get all this cheering whenever he put me up there and people use to say that was incredible and I use to think...damn! I was really terrible...and thought it was a blessing to have a talented band to drowned me out. I think they just liked seeing a girl dressed up punky holding an electric guitar surrounded by guys. lol

Hi Mary, Hi folks, the candidate was away all day, my aunt passed away, no big deal she lived to 89 and she was ready. Reason I mention is that they were the ones with the bucks, and my cousin lives 3 houses down from Bruce Spingstein and they have live in help, can you believe it? I clean offices for a living and run for governor with a $100 web site.
Mary, time flies, take out the guitar just for the hell of it. Look at the memories it brings back. And I'm all about promotion. Remember Carla? I posted a bunch of her good threads on my web site. Anybody like jazz?

Hey Gar, Sorry about your Aunt. Even though she was old it is a life and a loss. Carla? Was she that "retrictionist" that claimed she was into Rosa Parks? I remember I saw a Carla that had a guitar ship out in Conneticut.
Hey, have you checked out Asbury Park lately? Its beautiful. It has a NYC style to it with shops and cafes. All the historical buildings are still there and "The Stone Pony" is as grungy as it always was. I remember I saw Fish play there and The Diyvinals and I saw Warren Zevon play there. I remember the harpsichord player from the Linda Ronstadt band jammed with him there. "Its that Werewolves of London" time of year!
Did you aunt live in Deal? Did you ever check out the real estate in Deal? I think the least expensive home is around 800K. Way overpriced! Strange though you go from ruins that are run down to mansions a few blocks away.
You have to read the history on Ocean Groove and Asbury Park. Its really interesting. There is a book out there called Asbury Park and it takes about Springsteen and the Jersey Shore history.

Respect from people? What people? You and your multitude of characters that you post as. I do not need your respect. I can not respect someone that is not looking for a realistic solution. I see you as a person who copy's, pastes and posts anything you can come up with to go against a bunch of "undocumented people". You do not have solutions that benefit the working class people in the US (the vast majority). Your solutions are not reasonable therefore they are not respectable. If I am in the gutter than that is sad because the majority of America happens to be in the gutter with me and we are all searching for a better quality of life. We are looking for reasonable solutions and ways to fix the system. When you chase people around the Internet to attempt to intimidate and undermine their efforts to fix this mess you are extremely disrespectful. It is one thing to disagree but another when you tailgate so now you know how it feels when others do it back.
Just remember Liquiod...When you put people down you have to be prepared to go down along with it. If you want a civil conversation then you might want to put your own words into your posts with some kind of real sensible solution that doesn't suggest terrifying a group of "Immigrants". The vast majority of Americans do not approve of deporting people as a solution and they find this Halloween costume unappropriate (As you can see TARGET just pulled it from there shelves).
Use your FACTS to back a sensible future plan. When you use FACTS with your expanded volcabulary from playing too many rounds of scrabble as a means to try to make yourself sound educated to demonize someones elses ideas it is not much different than words spoken from the "gutter".

This costume can be looked at 2 ways. 1. as offensive and stereotyping, and 2. making fun of the fact that the mask is that of a true alien, meaning from outer space, E.T.

Estudar I apoligize I accidentally hit the like button for your comment. I like half of your comment.
I agree with #1) as offensive and stereotyping
Did E.T. wear an orange prison jumpsuit when he was hiding in the closet from the mean spirited "retrictionists".
All E.T. wanted to do was PHONE HOME

What is a "retrictionists"?
#2 is in regards to the so called area 51, those who believe in extra terrestrials. Its sarcasm towards those that believe in that sort of thing, but that is hard to read at times in a comment section.

Sorry, but I do not buy that one. The person who designed this costume is not much of an Artist ability when it comes to design nevertheless not much of a brain. Whoever made this costume has cost the buyers and the stores that stocked it some pain when it comes to credibility in their retail environment. When a buyer purchases a group of merchandise it is easy to miss this in the merchandise mix. Its unfortunate because my guess is the executive staff at Targets came down hard on the buyers for this mistake.
I went shopping at my local Targets last night and found that the costume was pulled from the shelves. If a large retailer like Target made a corporate decision to pull it they obviously agreed with #1) as offensive and a stereotype.
#2) Sarcasm towards those who believe in extra terrestrials.
*Huh!!

Estudar, a "restrictionist" as I understand it from seeing the word on this site, is someone who is for any controls on open immigration. Someone correct me if I'm wrong? We've seem to have lost all the red necks since the blog was without a host for so long, I thought I'd fill in.

Actually, I don't buy his story. I think he had to come up with a good one to cover-up this ridiculous costume.
I called all the stores and complained about the costume and I have to say I am even proud of ebay because I do so much business through them. buycostumes.com did not remove there costume and I usually spend around $100 to $200 dollars with them every year. I asked them to remove me from there customer list and I wish to return this years merchandise and I will spread the word to my friends to never order from them.
Toys R Us was wonderful they personally wrote me an email with an explanation and apolygee. I wrote back and told them I would consider shopping with them in the future because they took corporate responsibility with the situation and put people first.

Lol, you are right on mark, Liquid Reigns. I do eat my own.
I don't particularly find this costume offensive as much as the masks, which are just plain racist. I just think it is in poor taste and doesn't really describe my personal sense of style. But it really isn't about what I think. If the costume is offending a bunch of people, then it is really up to the business to ascertain whether it wants to get bad press and lose customers. Most of the companies went the smart way and marked the item as 'out of stock.'

Most companies did go the smart way and they took the time to write me back and apologize. I am now a fan of Toys r Us because they gave the best customer service out of all the retailers. I do give buycostumes.com a huge thumbs down. They never took the time to respond to me and so I called and had them delete my account. The joke is on them because I had a $173.00 sale in my basket that I was planning to buy and they lost the sale.
The buzz is out everywhere about this costume with young people. My niece told me all about it. She said that all the kids thought it was racist. She did feel that it made sense that the designer of the costume was trying to make fun of the "lou Dobbs" thing but unfortunately without putting his name on the jumpsuit the statement was too confusing and the meaning was lost but our youths now are aware that "Lou Dobbs" is a butthead.
Funny how we need "shock value" to catch the eyes of the press but overhaul it looks like the costume hit the mainstream and it made people think about the issue and that press turned out to be a postive thing.

Liquiod, I find it quite hillarious that you are able to run a conservationist business while you work in Washington D.C. and list office furniture for sale on ebay?? that must be picked up on wallstreet? and Alien Halloween costumes? and anti Obama and Socialist bumper stickers? What is that all about?

64% of Americans are for Immigration Reform and that includes a path to citizenship. There are only 15% that oppose the undocumented. I would suggest that you get big garbage bag to wear around you for Halloween because your comments are trash worthy.

Well you have your name on the ballot!! and now you are going to get your name out there. I have Hope that the "right winged" are going to get a big surprise when they realize they have destroyed their party with all this anti-minority stuff. If they had it together they would have had a great normal candidate running and would win New Jersey but I am pretty sure this race is going to prove on a national level they need to change their partys strategy and stop offending everyone with there same talking points. I am glad you are on the ticket because you get your name out there and I enjoy watching you split the vote as well. The minority population is growing so rapid nationwide that anyone who opposes Immigration is just digging their ditch politically for the future.
