My Name is Carol and I am Undocumented
Published July 17, 2009 @ 07:46PM PT

This week's guest Dream Act guest post is written by Carol, an undocumented student who is lobbying her Congressional members for passage of the DREAM Act. Visit Dreamactivist.org to find out how you can help pass the Dream Act.
I came to this country when I was six years old and have been in this country ever since. My parents brought me to this country to have a better future and life. Unfortunately, life in Mexico during the early 1990's like today, was full of poverty and corruption. Therefore, my parents opted to risk my life as well as theirs, to come to this unknown land, the one described by many as the land of opportunities, the land where dreams come true, the land of the United States of America.
At the tender age of six I comprehended everything that was surrounding my life. I clearly remember the traumatic and life-threatening experience I had when my parents and I crossed the border. After that experience I have been motivated to do everything in my power to excel and make my parents proud of me. I dedicated myself to my studies and excelled academically at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. Due to my academic and community service achievements as well as school activities I was the first person in my family to attend a prestigious university, Rutgers University, and qualify for many scholarships. However, like you must already know, I was unable to receive financial assistance and therefore qualify for any scholarships due to my illegal status.
My dream since a young girl had been to become a teacher. I have done everything in my power to fulfill that dream. And even though this minor obstacle was put in front of me, I still kept on with my dream and continued with my plans to attend college. I had to get two jobs in order to have enough money to pay for my tuition. I struggled many days and sleepless nights working extra shifts at my job to have sufficient money to pay for my school.
After a lot of obstacles and struggles and most importantly with God's help I graduated college. Part of my dream was fulfilled. This past May I graduated college and became once again, the first person in my family to obtain a college degree. I was extremely content with my achievements, however, once again my reality smacked me right across the face and almost knocked me down. Right after my graduation, I was accepted into a prestigious Alternate Route Teaching Program for New York City. It was an alternate route teaching program that enables candidates to obtain a teaching license and a Master's degree. I was accepted into the program and was about to start the orientation when I was informed to bring my documents to verify my legal status. When I informed the representatives of my situation, I was informed that I was unable to continue with the program and that my application and admittance had to be revoked.
I was devastated because my dream was shattered into little pieces. I tried my best to find a loop hole; I talked to anyone that I could. I even talked to the chancellor of New York City's public schools but all was in vain. There was nothing that could have been done. Due to the fact that I am an illegal immigrant I have no opportunity to fulfill my dream and help those who truly need the most help of all, the children. Although this has been a major obstacle in my life that has prevented me to work and establish myself as a professional, I decided to keep studying. Currently, I am enrolled in a community college pursuing a nursing career. I pray to God that once I am done with this field of study and new career the Dream Act will be a law and therefore I will be allowed to work and fulfill my dream.

I feel sorry that you have had to go through all of this. I too have had a similar story as yours. Many students in our situation are forming groups to try to make this happen and I too hope that a dream-act will pass soon.

to come to this unknown land, the one described by many as the land of opportunities, the land where dreams come true, the land of the United States of America.
This isn't disneyland, it is a country. And it is a land of opportunities, but your family was lied to. who ever told them to sneak across the border and they would be treated like a citizen was lying to your family. it doesn't work like that and after 911 the began to enforce the policy. the good thing is that you were able to get a good education from the americans. they paid for your primary education. The people in your country need you more than the americans do. You will be a great asset to your people. Maybe if more educated people migriate south my children will be able to enjoy a holiday down there. You are bright and educated. You will be a huge asset when you go home. Not the answer you want to hear but it is the cold truth as i see it.

Hilary, As an American; I beg of you to shut up... God. Some of you in here are soo disgusting. Who cares if she entered illegally, it wasn't her fault and there wasn't any means for her to change her status.
I dont support coming here illegaly, but at the same time; I wouldn't want to take this person back. The reaon for that is because tons of people enter through legal channels, and then what?!?...
If I had to shoose between this girl who came through no fault of her own, who has shown me her accomplishments and someone who came legally and did nothing in this country except abuse the benefits that greencard holders get; I would choose this girl.
some of you forget that entering this country takes only paperwork, we let people in without knowing what they going to do once here, how are they going to contribute.
I wish I could deport certain Americans out of here. I dont care what your passport says, I care more about what you have accomplished in this country. My grandparents immigrated from Italy, they were seen as dirty and smelly. you talk about all this assimilation, try to assimiliate into society when you are living in the shadows.
This is going to start a trolling rampage, but what can you do... I have to share this land with people like you.

Hillary,
I'm a Commanche and I think I would rather have you leave MY country than her. Don't act so high and mighty and act like you somehow have more right to be here than anyone else not native to this land.

With all due respect, Mr. Brown, I would think a Comanche would know how to spell their own heritage.

Jeez, do I need to say it again? "We don't own this country anymore. It belongs to China!"
I have come to another conclusion, about this cause. It segregates, divides, and creates more racism.
If you took Mexico, out of the,"immigration equation," our immigration system would work just fine. (Not Mexicans, MEXICO.) Trying to hold the U.S. accountable for the way Mexico exploits its own people, just doesn't make any sense. By coming to the U.S. undocumented, they set themselves up for the same exploitation, but even worse. (I see it every day.) The Mexican Government is the problem, and its people just want a solution. For them, they look to the North, with optimism; not realizing the same situation awaits them here.
Our Government will be the same, soon enough. Who knows, I might find myself looking to our Northern neighbors for a solution.
P.S. Mr. Brown, go read an American History book. Your beef should be with Spain, they exploited Native Americans long before the Europeans settled here.

Prerna,
I accidentally reported William when I meant to press "Like"...although these comments are starting to get out of hand, I must say. As Dave will tell you, one of the big headaches of this blog is moderating the comments (I'm sure Dave won't miss this part). I am going to do my best to keep my own comments polite and "above board" so you can enjoy your week here. Glad to have you on board :-)

Hello again, analisa
No reporting, I’m glad you did it by accident. there was too much of that silliness on the Daily Kos where I blogged until I was banned. Long story but I’ll say this much, I ran afoul of idiots using the site to post cat pictures and gossip, but everyone there including the “pootie” diarists are forever on the lookout for trolls……and it gets out of hand. The site is very powerful, it accepts pictures, you-tubes, moving targets etc.
Let everyone talk here, I even recommended the comment with the word “Chief” in it, I’m a conservative and I busted out laughing, no harm done. For what it’s worth will continue reading on down threads and I hope I have strength to comment about the author of this story who I have a lot of sympathy for. I get a sore kiester from sitting at the computer so long. Thanks.
p.s. I transfer these comments over from WORD, can anyone tell me what all that computer code is when I do that? I delete it and post.

I'm sorry you have to labor under the yoke of antiquated laws in this morally impoverished land. It sounds like Rutgers taught you well.

I have a similar story, but I wanted to be a doctor. I have my B.S. in biology and was ready for medical school, now I have to settle for nursing school. One of the things that upsets me the most is too see people my age who are citizens and they have no desire to do anything with their lifes. These people don't even think a high school diploma is important, some just get drunk or high, others have kids and collect welfare, others just end up un jail or worst. I just don't get it. People like this are not productive members of this country and yet have all the benefits that we DREAM to have.

Carol, I am tremendously impressed by your accomplishments. Your story illustrates that the DREAMers have to work twice as hard to accomplish what other students take for granted in this country (working extra shifts, etc). It distresses me to see such dedicated, hard-working students denied opportunities simply because they lack a certain document. How absurd it is! President Obama has said that the DREAMers are Americans for all purposes, except for a piece of paper. We need more nurses and teachers with your dedication and commitment. If you believe in yourself, no one can hold you back. Thank you for sharing your story with us, Carol.

My first thread was yesterday, and the first response back was from you, Analisa, and I didn’t know what DREAMers was. Too bad you can’t use can’t use links, I would have known right away.
Anyone who reads this and doesn’t know where I’m coming from, I’ll spare a link- I don’t want to seem like I’m taking advantage, it’s in another thread anyway- I’m a little s**t on the ballot for Governor of NJ as an Independent. The diarist went to school in my home state which is interesting since I’m for amnesty- but after Mexico gives back something to us- as in taking seriously the corruption down there by arresting some crooked police after they announce they’re as serious about that crack down as the one against the drug cartels. It wouldn’t take much, if the whole world was watching, if and when we instituted a boycott from here. Don’t the Hispanic’s realize what a powerful force they can be? I’m Jewish and look at- what is it APAIC, the lobby accomplishes.
The first step in helping the diarist in my “dream world” would be if I could, since I’m a candidate and treated with seriousness by the media, tisk, tisk, get one reporter to go down to Mexico with me, and visit my two friends who previously lived in my Republican house for 5 years but are back home now. I’d show that stinkin reporter a thing or two. But it’s never going to happen……….me showing how both Dems. and Rep. could be in this thing together.
p.s. against my advise at the time, my friend tried 7 times to recross the border but got caught every time. I told him don't do it, I'll get some action going up here. Boy was i naive.

I too am attending school at Idaho State University, it is very difficult to attend college and have to pay it in full out of pocket. it is one of the most frustrating and hindering things we must go through. i was able to save enough money for this semester and planned on getting a job to help me continue on to next semester. with the economy suffering the way it has, it's been hard for me to find a job. i am slowly but surely running out of my savings and find myself forced to drop out of school for the following semester...for the third time! hopefully i find a job soon and save enough money throughout the winter and summer to try this again next fall, with God's help and grace, the DREAM Act will have been enforced by then.

Brown Eyes, today is election day in NJ for Governor. I’m on the ballot; only a handful of people even know that, or why I did it. No big deal, I’m already revving up for next year. On the remote chance that gets me any attention- (pssss, truth be told I’m doing it right this time) I’d like to be in touch with you over the coming months.
(What the heck, for you and the others, here’s part of the strategy. I’m going to change parties and become a Democrat, try to win that nomination, and be the main opposition to my Republican congressman in the fall. I’m never going to raise any money therefore I’ll need a bunch of rabbits to pull out of a hat.) What about keeping me informed on how you’re making out? No publicity, just an anyonomous friend.
I’m fascinated that you just joined this blog and went back 4 months to post this thread. There was a more recent “Dream Act” profile but something about it made me…..
As I said, I’d like to, little by little, know how you’re progressing. Your real name is not important. I understand I’m asking a lot considering the pressures you must be under and your age. I know for sure you're mature. Read about me and decide, given my background, my determination, and last but not least, my natural fiscal conservatism, whether I might make a compelling candidate against the 9 term incumbent Republican, who if I remember correctly from 08 (I was a candidate then as well) would “be the first to oppose any amnesty….” I'd like to include you in my circle of friends.
I’m also a little curious why your real name showed up in my email, and of course the e-mails of the others who contributed threads to this story? Maybe someone here can explain.

p.s. The charge to get into that resort? About $30, or three days pay for two of those guys in the video. The other does better playing soccer on the wknds. for cash. His money goes into the family pot. He just got a job as a teacher and that' s an interesting story on its own.
