Another Anti-Immigrant Attack Ends in Tragedy

Published December 10, 2008 @ 07:00AM PT

First Luis Ramirez.

Then Marcelo Lucero.

Now Jose Sucuzhanay.

There's been another fatal attack on a Latin@ in the Northeast, and evidence that the killing was motivated by the race of the victim.

"Latino."  "Immigrant."  "Illegal."  "Mexican."  "Beaner."  I don't know what the attackers yelled at Sucuzhanay as they beat him into a coma with a metal bat, but it was probably worse than what I've written here.

This attack also may have been triggered by the perceived sexual orientation of the victim.

The two brothers from Ecuador had attended a church party and had stopped at a bar afterward. They may have been a bit tipsy as they walked home in the dead of night, arm-in-arm, leaning close to each other, a common tableau of men in Latino cultures, but one easily misinterpreted by the biased mind.

Suddenly a car drew up. It was 3:30 a.m. Sunday, and the intersection of Bushwick Avenue and Kossuth Place in Bushwick, Brooklyn, a half-block from the brothers' apartment, was nearly deserted - but not quite. Witnesses, the police said, heard some of what happened next.

Three men came out of the car shouting at the brothers, Jose and Romel Sucuzhanay - something ugly, anti-gay and anti-Latino. Vulgarisms against Hispanics and gay men were heard by witnesses, the police said. One man approached Jose Sucuzhanay, 31, the owner of a real estate agency who has been in New York a decade, and broke a beer bottle over the back of his head. He went down hard.

Romel Sucuzhanay, 38, who is visiting from Ecuador on a two-month visa, bounded over a parked car and ran as the man with the broken bottle came at him. A distance away, he looked back and saw a second assailant beating his prone brother with an aluminum baseball bat, striking him repeatedly on the head and body. The man with the broken bottle turned back and joined the beating and kicking.

"They used a baseball bat," said Diego Sucuzhanay, another brother. "I guess the goal was to kill him."

It looks like they succeeded.

An Ecuadorean immigrant who was brutally beaten in Brooklyn last weekend in what the police have described as a possible bias attack was declared brain-dead on Tuesday, a law enforcement official said. But the man was being kept on life support while his family decides whether to donate his organs, the official said.

. . .

Speaking outside the hospital, Diego Sucuzhanay said his brother had been singled out for his "skin color" and sounded a warning to other immigrants. "Today my brother is the victim, but tomorrow it could be your brother, your mother, your father," Mr. Sucuzhanay said.

I used to live in the next neighborhood over from Bushwick, and if a crime like this can happen in a Latin@ neighborhood like Bushwick, it can happen anywhere.  Who will be next?  When will those responsible for propagating anti-immigrant hysteria acknowledge the consequences of their efforts?

I guess it's okay that 25 Americans a day are killed by an illegal alien?  Why are people frustrated and angry?  Because our immigration laws are not being inforced.  Americans are losing their jobs, their way of providing for their families.  All the while illegals march in our street, carrying the Mexican flag high and proud with our American flag under theirs upside down. A sign of defeat.  We are not defeated.  Why don't you check out the La Raza site?  You want to see hate?  They want to kill all whites and blacks.  Don't talk to me about being anti anything, except anti breaking our laws.  Don't turn this into an illegal issue.  You weren't there. Maybe the whole thing started in the bar they had just come out of.  But when ever possible it's turned into a race issue.  I don't care what race you are.  All laws apply to you.  No free pass.
When our government finally does what the real Americans want done then there will be peace, or atleast more peace.  This is our country.  We will not give it up.
Americans are not going to allow their jobs to be given to illegals.  We are going to fight back.  Congress is going to be in a fight like never before if they try to pass comprehensive immigration.
If you can't speak English, press #2 for directions back to YOUR home country.

It's sentiments like db's that create a climate in which attacks like this one occur.

The comment is so filled with speculation and misinformation that I don't even know where to start.  Perhaps with the fact that both victims were in valid immigration status ... all the stuff about "illegals" had little to do with these two men.  But it just shows how deep these feelings run and how unmoored from reality the nativist movement has become.

Dave Bennion, I think DB hit the nail right on the head. I think you are the one spreading disinformation, typical liberal tactic.
It is fact 25 a day are killed at the hands of illegal aliens. 8 children a day are also sexually assaulted by illegal aliens. Contact  Republican Steve Kings office if you want the equation on how they came up with those stats. I have the stats, you have your opinion, and you know what they say about that.

Just from reading the article you can tell that it is biased towards the ad vocation of illegal immigrants. The fact is 50% of LA residents are illegal aliens. 90% of the murder warrants are for illegals in LA. Heck, 70% of the murder warrants in some small counties in Florida are for Illegals.

The fact the 3rd world immigrants have a violent culture and different way of life is not our fault. 100s of hospitals have closed in Cal due to the cost of illegal patients, 50+++ here in Florida are in jeopardy of going bk, most babies born in the ER in Martin Memorial are from illegals, google it. Its goes on and on, but you would ignore all of that wont you. Go ahead and lie again and say how misinformed we are. You are the one spewing ignorance.

I think you should open your house to illegals and give all your $ to them, you would then see how they are so willing to assimilate and appreciate the good fortune America has allowed them while breaking all of its laws and laughing in your face.

My research shows that 8 out of every 10 "jay birds" have [I preemptively removed my first Atrios-inspired impulse upon reflection] not advanced beyond the third grade.  Contact Senator Eric Cartman for the stats--he's got them on file.  Trust me.

After I called out the previous commenter for not linking to any reliable source, jaybird proceeded to make even more outrageous claims and fail to back them up.  This, my friends, doesn't do much lend credibility to The Cause.

My assertion that neither of the brothers attacked in Bushwick had violated any immigration law goes unaddressed--instead we get additional scattershot vituperation against immigrants.

I do in fact work closely with immigrants in my profession and the picture you've painted has little to do with the reality that I see each day at work.

  5. So maybe 25 "americans" are killed everyday at the hands of "illegals". But what is there to say about a reverse situation. I mean many "illegal" immigrants dont report hate crimes out of fear.

Ultimetly, people shouldnt be killed because they're gay or latino or what-ever it may be. What happened to the freedom the United States promises? Or is it only for the select priviledged?

Comments that express hatred only prove the point that was being conveyed to begin with. Hate crimes are real and no matter how much everyone tries to disguise it; it exist.
As to pluralize that illegals are "Mexicans"; yes some are, but check a world map and see how many more countries arent Mexican. Lets not be biased when we place information here.

Im Mexican-American, and yes, im one of the "MEXICANS" that carry the flag around because i have pride not because i'm racist. I also carry the US flag and i feel equally loyal to both my nations.

As an end note, "If you can't speak English, press #2 for directions back to YOUR home country."...No...do some research. The United States has no official language!

Mr. Bennion, you may choose to turn your head to the reality that illegal immigration is destroying this country, maybe because without them you'd have to find some other means of work and these people look to you as some sort of savior.  As a Hispanic myself, I am just horrified and embarrassed by the illegals from central and south America coming to this country making demands.  My family didn't make demands and we were grateful for being allowed to live in a free country where you can create your own future.  We didn't "expect" anything for free, as many coming here are doing.  We never experienced any bias towards us but I see a trend where Americans are starting to lump us all together no thanks for people like you.

Dave, you're dealing with an organization that thinks the North American Union and the Amero are real and that Barack Obama's birth certificate is fake and he's not a real U.S. citizen even though they didn't even question John McCain's eligiblity even though he was the one born outside the U.S.. Notice the focus on Mexicans, Mexicans this , Mexicans that, Mexicans, Mexicans. Add on top of all this the average age is well past retirement, it's a recipe for hateful and loney people with nothing to do all day spamming your blog.

  10. "When will those responsible for propagating anti-immigrant hysteria acknowledge the consequences of their efforts?"

Yes, it appears that our tolerance for anti-immigrant hysteria and  homophobia contributed in large measure to the brutal murders of three innocent men.  I tried to process my feelings about these senseless murders on Dee's blog yesterday (I hope you don't mind that I quoted you):

I don’t have the words I need right now to express my grief, outrage and sorrow over the brutal murder of Jose Sucuzhañay. Like Marcelo Lucero, Mr. Sucuzhañay was from Ecuador. These killings of innocent men are having international repercussions as people the world over question what it is about our American culture that tolerates and gives rise to such horrific violence. During the funeral for Mr. Lucero in his hometown in Ecuador, the Rev. Jorge Moreno described Mr. Lucero’s death as “the product of a feeling of xenophobia that makes some people believe they are worth more than others.” Ecuador’s ambassador to the United States, Luis Gallegos, called it a lynching. This is the xenophobia that gets displayed on this blog day after day (ANTIs). It is no different from the xenophobia that was displayed towards earlier groups of immigrants to the United States. In the wake of The Immigration Act of 1924, there were massive raids and deportations of Italians and Jews from Southern and Eastern Europe. As Yave writes in his blog on the history of immigration:

“The laws put in place in response to the Ellis Island period helped to ensure that hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees fleeing from German persecution before and during World War Two did not enter the U.S., instead meeting their deaths in the gas chambers.”

Many immigrants who come to the United States are fleeing violence. It is true that some come here for economic reasons…but they are fleeing a different kind of violence: the violence of U.S. trade policies that throw them off the land, depriving them of the basic means to make a living – policies that lead to hunger and desperation. How cruel and ironic that when they finally arrive in the “land of the free,” they are often met with the most vicious and hateful xenophobia that often escalates into further violence. Dear Antis, please take note: Hateful words often have hateful consequences. You may think you can rationalize it or sweep it under the rug, but the whole world is watching. Enough is enough!

It is incredible how insidious and alive white supremacy remains as a cornerstone to this country yet the United States prides itself on providing "liberty and justice for all" by telling our children to believe this as they pledge allegiance to the flag daily. It is true that what is occuring today in immgration policy and violence is deja vu. Before it was Latino immigrants, they were Jewish and others from Southern and Eastern Europe. The bottom line has always been fear of the other and a desire to keep white Americans  and "their" country "pure." Whether you want to believe it or not, this is a nation of immigrants. There is no single definition of whiteness. Over the years as immigrant groups grew larger, those who were accepted into white America have been absorbed into its power structure because that is the only way that the power structure can reamin in tact. This is how white American reinvent themselves to remain powerful.

This is not an issue of who is breaking the law or not. Granted, many people are entering the country illegally, but can we just clarify who. Way too often this discussion of illegal immigration has come to paint all Mexicans as criminals when they are not the only immigrant group entering without documentation. But lets own up to the real issue here and that is racist nativism. White Americans are afraid of losing "their" country to Latinos entering from all parts of Mexico, Central and South America; people who are entering because of a lack of economic opportunities in their home countries caused by US involvement in their economics and politics.

I'm sure if you ask most immigrants if they would prefer to live at home they would. My family came here legally from the Dominican Republic and every single one of my aunts and uncles would prefer to return. If the US would enter into valid trade agreements with Latin American countries that allow those economies to thrive, then maybe these people can remain home and not have to risk their lives, leave their children, and enter this violent and unwelcoming country just to have a chance at a fair life. A fair life where they know they can work to provide for their families, have a roof over ther heads, and feed and clothe their children. Why can't they have a fair shot at life?

    To Amy Eusebio -

This country, just as any country, must have control over who is coming into this country and how many.  Terrorists are here as well as the rest of the uninvited.  We cannot keep up with the explosive and rampant population growth resulting from so many coming into this country by hook and crook.  We have non-citizens that come here and over-stay their visas, and we have those who creep across the border avoiding the authorities.  Those who sneak into this country have the potential to bring diseases that we have all but eliminated in this country.  If they are severely lacking in education and are backwards enough, they can be a danger to the citizens of this country.  There are so many reasons not to allow our borders to be a free-for-all that I can't list them all here.  I am not racist.  I am just tired of everyone not born in this country feeling as though they are entitled to be in this country.  Everyone has their hand out to this country.  Well, now we're broke.  We aren't such a bottomless pool of money and opportunity.  We are vulnerable.  We have a lot of needy people born and raised right here and those people should be the priority over some newcomer who came here with an attitude and his/her hand out.  Our impoverished citizens are much more deserving of a "fair shot at life" than the invaders who have forced their way into this country.  And how dare you blame the United States for the pathetic state of the economies of Latin American countries.  The corruptness of the governments of those countries is the root of that and my suggestion is that the citizens of those countries stay home and fight for change.

    Rafael Trujillo

    Augusto Pinochet
    Jorge Rafael Videla
    Ríos Montt
    Anastasio Somoza García
    Alfredo Stroessner

If few of these names sound familiar, I wouldn't be surprised.  The U.S. role in propping up brutal dictatorships in Latin America (not to mention direct invasions and occupations) is not a subject much taught in schools here.  Here is a primer:

  15. Since we've strayed to the topic of U.S./Latin American relations, I was wondering if you could do a blog on Colombia at some point?  It distresses me that most U.S. citizens know so little about the situation in this country, yet we have shelled out close to $5 billion on a government with one of the worst human rights records in the hemisphere.  The result is three to four million refugees, many of whom will end up in the States.  Not to mention that there are all these major scandals involving our "good friend" Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and his government. Many lawmakers from Uribe's party, including his former domestic intelligence chief have been jailed for having ties to right-wing paramilitary death squads.  The latest scandal involves the kidnap and murders of hundreds of young, impoverished men by the Colombian army: the "false positives" scandal.  There is also the little matter of U.S. corporate involvement in some of these scandals. In March 2007, Chiquita Brands pleaded guilty to allegations that company officials made payments to paramilitary groups, including the United Self Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC). The company agreed to pay $25 million in a settlement case investigated by the U.S. Justice Department.  I believe there's another lawsuit by the families of the victims of the paramilitary forces in the banana growing regions of Colombia to recover damages for human rights abuses.   Eric Holder, who was recently named by Obama for the position of U.S. Attorney General, is the lead attorney in that case on the side of the defendant Chiquita Brands.  I just wish that Americans were more aware of this situation (sigh). It seems to me that if you're being taxed for stuff like death squads, you should know how your money is being spent
